AII CT (Plain and Contrast Studies)

A computerized tomography (CT) scan creates detailed images of the body using X-ray techniques. They provide more clarity and details than an ordinary X-ray and use a computer to create cross-sectional images or slices of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside the body.
A CT scan helps medical professionals diagnose and treat various diseases or medical conditions. They are painless procedures and the whole process typically takes about 30 minutes.
For a CT scan with contrast, a contrast or dye will be injected into your vein, this process highlights specific tissues, organs or blood vessels, enabling medical professionals to diagnose and treat various medical conditions. The contrast agents generally flush out from your system within 24 hours.

Test Preparation

For CT scan procedures, proper preparation is essential to ensure high-quality imaging. For plain CT scans, minimal preparation is typically required, though patients may be advised to avoid eating a few hours before the scan, especially for abdominal imaging. Contrast CT scans, which involve injecting a contrast dye to enhance visibility of blood vessels and tissues, require patients to stay hydrated and possibly fast for a few hours beforehand. If you’re allergic to contrast dye, inform the technician as medications may be provided to prevent allergic reactions.
For CT angiography (excluding coronary angiograms), where blood vessels are examined in detail, fasting for 4-6 hours prior is usually required, and contrast dye will be administered.
In musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging, CT scans are highly effective in diagnosing fractures, joint abnormalities, or soft tissue injuries. No special preparation is needed, but the patient should wear comfortable clothing and remove any metal objects, as they can interfere with the imaging process.
